8 former Manchester United players who could still win trophies this season

Unfortunately, there will be no trophies for Manchester United this season, now for the fifth consecutive year. The club’s newfound allergy to winning silverware was a chore for supporters who had grown accustomed to winning.

United fans boasted that the only way after leaving United was to go down. But that no longer seems to be the case.

Several players have found success after leaving Old Trafford, and that is set to continue this season. There are eight former Red Devils who could win major trophies in 2021/22…

At the age of 40, Zlatan Ibrahimovic could claim his first Serie A title since winning in 2008/09 with Inter.

This time Zlatan could do it with AC Milan, who are looking to win their first Scudetto since 2010/11.

Milan are currently top of Serie A with a three-point lead with eight games remaining. It’s close, with Napoli on three points and Inter on six points with one game less.

Zlatan has scored eight goals in 18 games, 11 of which have started, and if he can go on to win the title, it could be the most satisfying league win of his career.

Milan are also in the Coppa Italia semi-finals against rivals Inter, drawing 0-0 after a tight first leg.

Matteo Darmian

On the other side of Milan, Inter full-back Matteo Darmian will hope to help the Nerazzuri retain the Serie A title they won last season.

Darmian, 32, has made 19 league appearances for Inter this season, scoring once, and if they can win their game in hand they will be just three points behind leaders AC.

Inter have a tough away game against Juventus this weekend, and there’s also the Coppa Italia to try and win from their perspective too.

Alexis Sanchez

Darmian’s Inter team-mate Alexis Sanchez has had a new lease of life at the club since he happily ended his career at Manchester United.

He’s still not prolific, scoring just three league goals, but Sanchez remains a key part of Inter’s squad, with 21 league games.

He won the title last season with Inter, and like Darmian could yet become a two-time Italian winner if results deteriorate this season.

Memphis Depay

Memphis Depay landed a dream move to Barcelona last summer after an impressive stint at Lyon. La Liga is beyond their reach, but there is a cup to be won.

Barcelona are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League where they face Eintracht Frankfurt. Win that, and a semi-final against West Ham or former club Lyon awaits.

Depay has scored 10 goals in 20 La Liga appearances, although he is yet to score in continental competition for the club.

Gerard Pique has enjoyed incredible success since leaving Manchester United in 2008, and like Depay, he can still win the Europa League with Barcelona.

It would be the first time he has won the competition, as this year is the first time he has entered it.

Pique recently celebrates his 600th appearance for Barcelona, the fourth highest figure in his history.

Maria’s Angel

Angel di Maria only lasted one season at Manchester and he is not remembered fondly at all. Since leaving, however, he has enjoyed great success.

Di Maria has won four Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and is on course to claim a fifth, 12 points clear of the top team.

The 34-year-old has become more of a peripheral figure towards their success, scoring three goals and providing three assists this season.

Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera joined Di Maria at PSG in 2019 and he is set to win the Ligue 1 title for the second time.

Herrera has made 17 appearances in his league run, scoring three goals, also scoring once in the Champions League.

Along with Di Maria, Herrera has helped manager Mauricio Pochettino as the PSG boss moves closer to winning his first-ever league title.

Daley Blind

Daley Blind is a key part of Erik ten Hag’s system at Ajax and will be hoping to win the Dutch league and cup double this season.

Ajax are two points clear of PSV at the top of the table and will also face PSV in the upcoming KNVB Cup semi-finals.

If Ten Hag is linked with United, Blind will play an important role in sending him to Old Trafford on a high note.

Blind, 32, has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Ajax this season, mostly as a left-back.
