Barbara J. (Gregwire) Scheck


Barbara J. (Gregwire) Scheck, 71, of Russell, Kansas, died Saturday evening June 18, 2022 at her home.

Barbara was born October 1, 1950 in Russell, daughter of Gordon and Marilyn (Flohr) Gregwire. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1968. She then attended Emporia State University for a year and then transferred to Fort Hays State University where she earned a degree in nursing.

Barbara was united in marriage to Timothy F. Scheck on August 7, 1971. This union was blessed with two daughters, Mindie and Kristie. They made Hays their home from 1971 until 1974 when they moved back to Russell.

Barbara was a registered nurse at Russell Hospital for over 20 years, working primarily in the surgical department. Then from 1994 to 1998, she worked with Russell Home Health. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was an active member of the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed doing puzzles like crosswords and cryptograms, cross-stitching, cooking, and cooking for her family and friends. What would make her eyes sparkle are her grandchildren, she loved to attend their activities and receive them at home. She also had a knack for knowing everyone’s birthday and made a special effort to call them on their special day.

Barbara’s surviving family includes her husband of 50 years, Tim of the House; daughters, Mindie Ulrich (Jeremy) of Russell, Kansas and Kristie Homeier (Brent) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Richard Gregwire (Janet) of McPherson, Kansas; sister, Roberta Jaye (Denny) of Lindsborg, Kansas; four grandchildren, Briar Ulrich, Gunnar Ulrich, Brock Homeier and Bryce Homeier; and precious nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Queen of Angels, followed by interment of ashes at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. Visiting hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. The vigil and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Queen of Angels.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations from the Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Contributions and condolences can be sent to the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler morgue, which is in charge of these arrangements.
