Dedication Ceremony Welcomes New Mural at College Station

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There’s a brand new mural at College Station thanks to the hard work of a senior at Texas A&M University.

A groundbreaking ceremony Sunday morning welcomed the new mural that spans the annex wall of the A&M United Methodist Church on Tauber Street. It exhibits some of the defining characteristics of both the school and the church.

Artist and congregation member Kaitlyn McCollum says it was fun to paint. She hopes that everyone who sees it, whether students, alumni or just visitors, will feel like they are part of the city and traditions of Aggieland.

“I was trying to find a mix of how to combine the church community and A&M and Aggieland as a whole, and what really spoke to me during my time at A&M,” said McCollum. “What matters a lot to me and to every Aggie that goes through this college and comes to college, what are they affected by as well.”

She says the part she enjoyed even more was all of the Aggies who stopped by to share their campus experiences with her throughout the process.

“I got to see the best of College Station,” McCollum said. “I was never alone for more than 15 minutes straight because it was neighbors living in the neighborhood, people walking around town, people going to Northgate on a Friday night, everyone wanted to s ‘stop and ask me about the process and tell me where they are from. We just figured out why they love A&M too.

McCollum says it took him about six weeks to finish and that he painted for 8 to 12 hours on some days. She says the hardest parts were dealing with the Texas summer heat and a case of vandalism.

McCollum has to be part of something bigger than a mural, she says.

“It’s really a lesson in humility and I’m really proud of it to be honest,” McCollum said. “I have wanted to go to A&M since the first day of my life, I feel like it. I have always dreamed of being here and wanted to do something big. I wanted to leave my mark on this campus. I wanted to give back to the university that has given to my family for so many generations, and to a church that has also been part of our family forever. Giving back just a small part and telling the stories of people in a community that means so much to me is a truly amazing experience. “
