Eleanor Lyne Obituary (1929 – 2022) – Mooresville, NC


Eleanor “Ellie” Kiplinger Lyne, of Boone, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 24, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was 92 years old.

Ellie was born August 4, 1929 in Cleveland Ohio, daughter of Gladys Jackson and Lawrence Ray Kiplinger.

Ellie has always been a free and creative spirit who loved people. His generosity, kindness and love of people knew no boundaries. She never met a stranger, only a future friend. Throughout her life, Ellie constantly found new ways to use her creativity and her loving soul to bring joy to all who had the chance to know her.

This was especially true in the way she entertained and communicated with her grandchildren. Amel, as they called her, enjoyed their time together very much. She hosted them in her mountain home for weeks throughout the year and filled their days together with crafts, sharing her love of nature and visiting her vast number of friends. Her grandchildren remember their time at Amel’s camp as some of their favorite childhood days.

As a teenager, Ellie took an early interest in music and fashion. She sang with many choral groups and it was through singing that she met her future husband and together they elevated every church service they attended.

She learned to sew at a very young age, which led her to pursue a career in fashion. She loved to dress up and had an artist’s eye for putting together an outfit. This interest carried her throughout her life and even at the age of ninety she was able to compose a colorful and joyful ensemble.

As an artist, Ellie wasn’t shy about experimenting with new mediums and ways of seeing the world. She looked forward to taking classes and always creating something beautiful. Her main artistic activities were painting, weaving, textile arts and collage. Her family is blessed with a legacy of artwork with a true expression of Ellie’s heart.

Ellie and George have always had an interest in gardening and Ellie earned her Master Gardener certification. They taught this love of the natural world to their two children. Ellie was an excellent cook and furthered that interest and skill with an exploration of nutrition that she fully embraced and shared with her family.

Ellie’s professional accomplishments began when she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising from Purdue University with honors in 1952. Prior to her marriage to George E. Lyne, Jr., she worked as an assistant fashion merchandising co-ordinator. fashion at The Halle Brothers Company and as a blood donor recruiter for the American Red Cross. While living in New York with her husband, she served as an administrative assistant to fashion designer Vera Maxwell. While at Chapel Hill, Ellie worked as an administrative assistant to the director of the NC Science and Technology Research Center. After moving to Boone, North Carolina in 1973, Ellie worked as a real estate broker and appraiser. She set a strong example for her daughter and granddaughters as an independent and outgoing woman working to make a difference.

Ellie was happy and fully engaged in the Boone community. She served as Chair of the Board of Jones House, Vice Chair of the Boone Planning Board, President of the Appalachian Womens Club, Chair of Family Support for Habitat for Humanity and active in the League of Women Voters for 25 years. .

Ellie is predeceased by her husband, George, of 51 years. She is survived by her brother Paul Kiplinger of Chagrin Falls, OH, her daughter Kathy Masters (Mike) of Decatur GA, her son, Jeff Lyne (Sharon) of Mooresville NC, her granddaughters Kinsey Lyne of Mooresville, NC, Natalie Lyne from Charlotte, NC, Olivia Lyne from Alicante, Spain, and her grandson Adam Lyne.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Ellie’s name to the Hunger and Health Coalition of Northwest NC (hungerandhealthcoalition.com) or Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County (hoic.org).

Services to celebrate his life are scheduled for August 6, 2022 in Boone, North Carolina
