Type of employment: Seasonal position (October to May) of an average of 25 hours/week with the possibility of working additional months of the year with a lesser time commitment.
Saint Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church in Sanibel, Florida is recruiting a minister of music and an organist and/or pianist/keyboardist for a dynamic and loving parish (340 people on average on weekends during the season). We are looking for a person of faith who can provide vision and compassionate leadership for our future music ministry.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Candidates must have the experience and skills to prepare and perform the music needed for two to three services per weekend (1 choir) plus holy days and special services during the high season from October to May. Duties include working with the Rector and staff to plan and provide music for all services, including forming, directing and directing the parish choir (15-20 adult singers) and recruiting and rehearsing contract musicians as needed. The incumbent is also responsible for planning the music and recruiting interim organists/keyboardists and soloists for the less demanding duty schedule from June to September. (He may also choose to personally assume the role of musician during all or part of this period.)
The Music Director further oversees all music-related functions in the church, including the maintenance of the two-manual electric sanctuary organ and the two grand pianos (in the music rehearsal room and in the hall parish); maintenance of the church’s library of musical scores; and the organization of occasional concerts with outside artists.
Excellent communication, organizational and collaboration skills are essential. Also required: mastery of the keyboard (organ and/or piano/electric keyboard), hymn playing, choir direction and accompaniment, liturgical improvisation and in-depth knowledge of the repertoire for choral keyboard and church soloist. Experience in Anglican and Episcopal liturgy and music is preferred. Knowledge of the technology used to amplify, record and live stream the Services is desirable.
While our congregation values traditional worship styles, the ideal candidate for this position will also be comfortable introducing repertoire from a variety of eras and traditions. Our priority is to promote the community, spiritual and pastoral value of the music program. We are looking for a candidate who would work to expand participation within and beyond the congregation, possibly including starting a community music development program for children and youth.
